Excerpt From 21 Days to Happiness
Day 1 - Gratitude: Focus on What You Have

Here are two of my favorite gratitude habits:
Morning: Every morning before my feet touch the floor, I grab my little gratitude journal from my night table. I’m supposed to write down three things I am grateful for, but the funny thing is, I can never stop at three!
Every day, I end up filling a page. When I started this practice about three years ago, I would often think of serious things (my health, family, career…). Now, anything goes: my comfy bed, the sun on my face, my boys, my dog Snoopy licking my toes, the cappuccino with a cinnamon heart my husband just made for me or my favorite TV show.
Psychologists call this free association. Just write whatever comes to mind without judging or overthinking. It’s faster and more fun. From time to time, I re-read a few pages, and it always puts a smile on my face.
Bonus tip: I often write down things that haven’t happened yet. For example, I’m now trying tosell my house. I often write down “I am thankful for the great and easy sale of my house,” and I imagine how I will feel when I see the red SOLD sign. It’s an instant morale boost.
Night: Every night, on a small piece of paper, I write one thing that happened that day that I am grateful for, and put it in a jar. Every December during the holidays, I look at the slips of paper in my pajamas as I sip my cappuccino by the fireplace. This is a great family activity as well. Everyone has their own gratitude jar, and each person reads a few of their notes at the start of the new year.

Grateful Girl - Start each morning like this little girl does (no need to stand on your bathroom counter). How great does she feel? What could you do to feel this good?
APPS:
If you are technically inclined, here is an APP called “Happier”. You can record what you are grateful for, and program a reminder as well. Available on iOS and Android.
I also love the simple APP “Three Good Things” Available on iOS.

I wish I had written this book. I am happy Ingrid did write this book. I think it should be available to all high school age children and offered in every first year Psychology course, among others.
Well researched and wonderfully presented, the book not only gives us easy to follow steps to increase our satisfaction with life and happiness in the moment, it explains why each action works.
The author goes on to share how she puts each principle to work in her daily life. She shows that it is possible.
This is a book that will not just sit on my shelf or bedside table. I will refer back to different sections and use the links and ideas presented.
